Comedian Leslie Nielsen has died at the age of 84. The actor's agent said Nielsen died of complications arising from pneumonia in a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, surrounded by his wife and friends.
His nephew, Doug Neilsen, told Canadian radio station CKNW the Hollywood veteran had been ill for nearly a fortnight.
"Leslie's been in the hospital now for a number of days, approximately 12 days and just in this last 48 hours the infection has just gotten too much," Doug Neilsen said.
"Today at 5.30 with his friends and wife Barbaree by his side he just fell asleep and passed away."
The Canadian-born Nielsen came to Hollywood in the mid-1950s after forging a successful television career in New York.
He quickly became known as a serious actor with leading roles in popular dramas such as The Forbidden Planet and The Poseidon Adventure but global fame only came when he turned to comedies in the 1980s.
Nielsen appeared in over 100 films but was best-known for his roles as an incompetent doctor in Flying High and the accident-prone detective Frank Drebin in the Naked Gun comedy series.
